Ephesians 2:1-3 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins (2) in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—(3) among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Are human beings born basically good? Paul answers that question in this passage and the answer is an emphatic no. Human beings are born dead in trespasses and sin with a heart that follows the course of this world. The passions of the flesh and desires of the mind and body control the actions of all mankind. This is not a condition that man can correct with his own will because his nature is enslaved by sin and death. Man is born spiritually dead and apart from action by God, man will remain spiritually dead as surely as people that are physically dead will remain physically dead.

Good post! On top of following the dead nature man is completely led about by the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience. Eph. 2:2. Yea, the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.
Mark,
Yes, without receiving the new covenant promise of a new heart a person is dead in the water. I found the following two sermons on Hebrews 8 and the new covenant. They are excellent:
New Covenant I
New Covenant II
I listened to part one. EXCELLENT!!!
Part two I'll come back to later.
